Team Singapore struck gold not once but twice on Tuesday - snatching the first two gold medals on offer at the SEA Games.

The two gold medals came in the sport of table tennis - a sport that Team Singapore excels in, giving the proud host-nation a perfect start to the Games.

Singapore was assured of winning gold in the women's doubles when both their pairings made it through to the final medal match witha surprise in the decider.

Zhou Yihan and Lin Ye, two of Singapore's brightest young paddlers, pulled off an upset when they beat their more experienced and more fancied compatriots, Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu.

Zhou and Lin had already clawed their way back from two games behind to win their semi-final against the Thai duo of Nanthana Komwong and Suthasini Sawettabut and then had to go the full distance again in the final.

In a nail biting all-Singaporean battle, Zhou and Lin held their nerves to stave off a determined fight back from Feng and Yu to triumph 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10, 3-11, 10-12, 11-7.

“We feel very honoured to be able to clinch the first gold medal for Singapore and we are very excited," a jubilant Lin told reporters.

In the men’s final, while Singapore only had one team it was a formidable one with three-time single champion Gao Ning, teaming up with Li Hu.

With the Singapore Indoor Stadium still buzzing after the women's final, Gao and Li made a double celebration when they romped to an 11-8, 11-8, 12-10 11-4 victory over Thailand's Padasak Tanviriyavechakul and Chanakarn Udomsilp.

Singapore also collected a bronze in the men's doubles through Clarence Chew and Chen Feng, taking the hosts to the top of the table with four medals.

Over in the sport of netball, the host-nation also maintained their unbeaten start in the women's netball competition after an action-packed 35-35 draw with Malaysia at OCBC Arena. The match also marked the 100th cap for defensive player, Premila Hirubalan.

Goalshooter Charmaine Soh made 23 of 32 attempts, while Goal Attack Chen Huifen netted 12 of 22 for the reigning Asian champions.

Malaysia, who won the netball gold medal 14 years ago, also remains undefeated in the six-nation women's event.

The two Southeast Asian neighbours are regarded as the two strongest teams in the competition and could meet again in the gold medal match.
