Jazreel Tan triumphed in an all-Singapore finals in the Women’s Masters Bowling on Sunday to ensure the Republic ended with 10 medals from the sport, including four golds.

Daphne Tan, beaten in the Finals, picked up silver medal after winning  team-mate Shayna Ng in the 2nd/3rd Place competition. Ng finished third in the competition but due to the SEA Games rule, which prevent one nation from sweeping the podium, she was not given a bronze medal.

In fact, the rankings for the Women’s Masters event saw Singapore finish in the top five positions - a clear indication of the country’s dominance in the sport at this SEA Games.

Jazreel won the clash at the Orchid Country Club by 516 pinfalls to 353 against team-mate Daphne.

Jazreel, an individual silver medalist in last year’s Asian Games, said it was a strange and uncomfortable experience to compete for gold against a friend and team-mate.

“It’s not nice to go against your own team-mate but at least we knew that whatever happened, it was a gold for Singapore. We weren’t fired up against each other, we just tried to play our own game and see who comes out on top,” said Jazreel.

“Half way through the second game I felt I was doing well and Daphne was struggling a little bit and then I was able to relax a little,” she added.

“It is a special feeling though to win on home ground, the first time in so many years that we are able to compete in a SEA Games in Singapore. It has been pretty amazing to witness the whole nation coming together,” she said.

The time-consuming nature of the bowling competition meant that she was unable to get out to see Singapore’s gold glory in other sports but Jazreel said she had still felt a big part of the whole spectacle.

“Unfortunately not able to watch any of those in person but news travels fast. We watched a few sports before the bowling started and I can’t wait to be part of the closing ceremony,” she added.

There is little time for rest for the team though, with competitions in Japan and the United States coming up before December’s World Championship in Abu Dhabi.

But after a week like this, Team Singapore’s bowlers will face those challenges in confident mood.
