Team Singapore’s Peter Gilchrist won a gold medal in the SEA Games English billiards finals on Sunday after a break of 196 gave him a 501-291 victory over Vietnam's Nguyen Thanh Binh.

The 47-year-old, three-times world champion, has now won gold in each of the four SEA Games he has competed in since the English born player began representing Singapore in 2009.

"I was losing early but got my head right and had some help from my coach and it worked out well," Gilchrist said after his win.

"I didn't play my best so it's nice to win knowing that I can improve. I just needed to keep faith in myself.”

Middlesbrough-born Gilchrist moved to the Republic in 2003 to become the national billiards and snooker coach. He gave up his British citizenship in 2006, resided in Singapore and began to represent the Republic almost immediately.

”It was great to win in front of my home fans, they gave me a real boost. The last SEA Games competition was in Myanmar and I beat a local. He had a crowd of 300 or 400 cheering and clapping all my misses. So it was great to have the crowd on my side today,” he said.

Gilchrist has three more events at the SEA Games, including the doubles and team events and he will be hoping to add yet more gold medals to Team Singapore’s medal tally.
