A dominant Team Singapore swept all three gold medals available in Monday’s Canoe events with Stephenie Chen getting the top spot twice on the podium.

The trio of medals takes the total of Canoeing golds to five so far, the Republic's best ever performance at the SEA Games. Singapore’s best ever medal haul in the sport came at the 2011 Games in Indonesia with two golds, five silvers and three bronzes.

In the K1 race, Chen raced to a clear lead by the final 200m and went on to finish in 1: 55.531 secs to beat Indonesia's Erni Sokoy (1:59.986) and Vietnam's Vu Thi Linh (2:03.644).

As if that wasn’t enough, the 23-year-old Chen came back out to compete in the K2, partnering Suzanne Seah in the defence of their title.

After an exciting contest, Singapore pipped Thailand to win in a time of 1:45.951, with the Thais taking home a silver (1:46.571) and Indonesia, a bronze. (1:49.921).

In the women’s K4, the team of Geraldine Lee, Soh Sze Ying, Annabelle Ng and Sarah Chen triumphed with a time of 1:39.506, finishing ahead of Thailand (1:41.586) and Vietnam (1:44.419).

It was a fantastic day for the team and in particular for the talented Chen, who was quick to express her appreciation for those who helped her to glory.

"This gold medal does not belong to me alone. It is a product of the hard work of a spectacular team: My coaches Babella Balazs and Denes Szaszak, the team from Singapore Sports Institute, the Singapore Canoe Federation, my team mates, and of course, every single person who came down to support me,” she said.

“This achievement would not have been possible without any one of them." she added.

The Canoe events finish on Tuesday with nine gold medals up for grabs.
