Football: Myanmar coach thanks fans for 4-2 win

03 June, 2015   Team Nila

From the opening whistle to the final one, the Myanmar fans sang and danced their hearts out. And their heroes did not disappoint, outplaying 2013 silver medallists Indonesia. Myanmar beat Indonesia 4 -2 at the Jalan Besar Stadium earlier this evening. The win sent them top of Group A in the 28th SEA Games football competition.

Left-winger Si Thu Aung scored 2 goals in the 38th and 54th minutes, while Shine Thura and Kyaw Zin Lwin also got on the scoresheet to send the Myanmar faithful home happy.

Paying tribute to the raucous crowd that powered his side to victory, Myanmar coach Kyi Lwin later said: “They were 100 per cent important today; we really have to say a big ‘thank you’ to our supporters.”

The result was just reward for his side, who came racing out of the blocks and never looked back after Shine Thura had fired them ahead in the 21st minute.

Indeed, well-taken goals from Manahati Lestusen and Ahmad Nufiandani were scant consolation to Indonesian coach Aji Santoso, whose side now have to pick themselves up to face Cambodia on Saturday.

“The situation is not good but the most important thing is that the players get over this result,” a visibly disappointed Santoso said. “But we still have three matches to go, and I believe we can still qualify for the semi-finals.”

For Myanmar, however, the win was just the result they needed before their next outing – on Thursday, against hosts Singapore.

“We have full confidence,” Kyi Lwin declared. “We told you – our objective is to win the gold medal.”

Over at the Bishan Stadium, Vietnam thrashed Malaysia 5 - 1 in their match up this evening. After Vietnam beat Brunei 6-1 last Friday, Vietnamese fans entered the grandstand in today with high expectations.

The team did not fail their fans. Known as the Vietnamese Messi, prolific goal scorer Cong Phuong scored within the first fifteen minutes of the game. The rest of the 5 goals came in the second half, much to the fans delight.

Malaysian coach Ong Kim Swee gave full credit to the Vietnamese team for their speed and dedication throughout the game.

The Vietnamese fans seemed very optimistic about their favourite team entering the final. Both Malaysia and Vietnam will play their next Group B match on Thursday, June 4.
