Singapore’s fencers thrilled the sold-out crowd at OCBC Arena Hall 2 on the first day of competition as they claimed three finals spots, resulting in their first ever individual gold medal and a medal haul including two silvers and one bronze medal.

Samson Lee and Lim Wei Wen were the first to land semi-final spots in men’s epee, but both were defeated by traditional fencing powerhouse Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Nhat in the semi-finals and finals respectively. Choy Yu Yong’s SEA Games debut in men’s sabre saw him meet another Vietnamese top seed Vu Thanh An, to whom he lost 11-15.

It was veteran women’s foilist Wang Wen Ying who swept the competition and decisively won her final match against Justine Gail Tinio from the Philippines 15-7, earning herself the individual gold medal that has long eluded Singapore.

Lim Wei Wen was effusive about the strong support that the Singapore crowd has shown, with all tickets for fencing sold out and a large home crowd cheering them on, “99% of my strength comes from them - to say thank you is an understatement. I’m grateful that we have the chance to show what fencing is about, that our team is strong, and I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming team event on 6th June.”
