It was a fashion show, but with a rather athletic twist.
Instead of strutting and posing, as supermodels do, the Team Singapore athletes that took to the runway at the recent Team Singapore x Giordano show wowed the crowds with complex leaps and twirls instead.
Following the success of the 2013 collaboration, Team Singapore and popular clothing label Giordano has, once again, teamed up to create an all-new line to show support for the nation’s athletes participating in regional meets this year.
Giordano has also pledged two percent of all net proceeds from its sales to Sport Singapore’s social arm, SportCares Foundation.
Opening the show with a stunning display of impressive kicks and stances were young members of the Sino Wushu Training Centre, who modelled the collection’s Nila-themed junior line.
However, the supermodels who showcased the collection’s signature looks were an unusually athletic set of five Team Singapore athletes: artistic gymnast and London Olympian Lim Heem Wei, national record-holding sprinter U.K. Shyam, SEA Games wushu gold medallist Tao Yi Jun, SEA Games water-polo gold medallist Lim Yao Xiang, and Paralympics swimmer Theresa Goh.
“I think this collection is great because when fans watch our events, they will be wearing clothes, right? So what better way to show instant identification with the team that you support by wearing a Team Singapore shirt? It’s really simple, and good for the athletes, because then they will be able to see, straightaway, where their supporters are,” observed Theresa.
In addition to the usual casual jerseys, polo and cotton t-shirts available, this year’s collection also comes with a refreshing new range of products: Team Singapore accessories. With Team Singapore umbrellas, scarves, caps, and even flip-flops forming part of the merchandise line, it certainly is good news for those keen on showing their backing for our sporting heroes.
Also present at the event was Sport Singapore's Chief, Strategic Development & Marketing Group, Toh Boon Yi.
“The designs are founded along the lines of “One Team Singapore”. Our message is quite clear, that everyone is a part of Team Singapore. Team Singapore does not just refer to the athletes themselves. We look at everyone being a part of the team, playing different roles. We want the supporters to be there at the Games to cheer our athletes on,” he explained.
“We hope to see Singaporeans from all walks of life turning up in the merchandise, [ready] to show their support. With Singapore hosting the Games this round, there is no better time to wear red,” concurred Giordano’s director of Southeast Asia Operations Patrick Yeo in a press statement.
Indeed, as Heem Wei put it, having a sea of red in the stands when competing in front of the Singapore crowd would be a bonus to the national representatives at the Games this year.
“I think home support is really important. As an athlete competing on the competition ground, when you look up and see your fellow Singaporeans there supporting you, it’s a very homely feeling,” she remarked.
So wear your team colours and support the nation’s campaign for excellence at the upcoming regional Games! This functional yet fashion-forward collection will be available at 22 participating outlets Giordano outlets from 25 May.
