Our Sporting Hero. My Neighbour. Amanda Lim.

“I have 2 cats called Ralphy and Bella, also collectively known as Belphy.” Amanda Lim gushed as she talked about her love for her cats. When she isn’t at school studying or training at the pool, you will most likely find Amanda spending time with her favorite fur balls.

We spoke to the national swimmer who got her start in swimming because of an asthma problem and impressively set a new games record in the 2013 SEA Games for the 50m Freestyle.

Getting to know our national swimmer

Q: Where is your area of residence?

A: Toa Payoh

Q: How long have you resided in your neighbourhood?

A: 22 years.

Q: What is the one thing you like most about your neighbourhood? (can be a particular facility, food stall, people etc)

A: There is a wet market/food center right downstairs my house and I love the ngoh hiang bee hoon there. It is the most awesome bee hoon ever. The taste is just unique.

Q: What drove you to your current sport?

A: I had asthma when I was young and my family doctor advised me to take up swimming, I’ve never looked back since.

Q: What was the one moment that most inspired you to be a sportsperson?

A: When I won my first medal at the age of 10 at a school competition. That was when I told myself I wanted to become better and win a gold medal at the SEA Games!

Q: Why did you become a sportsperson?

A: The feeling of winning and success at the end of the race is bitter sweet, and I think it is a feeling where only sportsperson can understand. Although there’s so much glory, it marks the end of the months of training for 25 seconds of pure perfection and dedication.

Q: What is the most interesting memory you have when playing your sport?

A: There is no one interesting memory as swimming has forged many close friendships and I have met a lot of new friends from all the over. I guess it is interesting to people as they often ask me how I swim up and down and stare at the blue line in the middle of the pool for 4 hours.

Q: What is the most embarrassing moment you’ve had while swimming?

A: I was very bad at my turns during my race. It was so bad that I would sometimes miss the wall because I turned too far out during the race and that was quite embarrassing for an elite athlete! Because, who can’t kick off the wall?

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals before a major sporting event?

A: My pre game ritual is to lie in bed and watch my favorite TV show as much as possible and also listen to my favorite electronic dance music (EDM) to get in the zone.

Q: If you were not allowed to play your current sport, which other sport would you pick up?

A: I would definitely go for the cooler sports like bowling or golf.

Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?

A: If it is to be, it is up to me.

Q: Who is your idol or the one person you aspire to emulate?

A: Roger Federer. He exemplifies good sportsmanship in all his matches. He does not throw a tantrum when things are not going his way, but instead lives in the moment. That is what sports should be all about.

Q: What is the one thing not even your friends know about you?

A: When I was in primary school, I was in the Chinese Dance and Chinese orchestra team for 2 weeks.

Q: What is your one food based guilty-pleasure?

A: Truffle fries for the win!

Q: Which country have you travelled to that has really left a mark on you?

A: Australia. I love the lifestyle there.

Q: If you had the chance to have a superpower, which would you choose?

A: I want to be able to teleport.

Q: Where do you draw your strength from?

A: By constantly reminding myself that I am doing this for the love and passion for swimming and that I have come too far to give up now, so I might as well make the best out of it.

Q: How would you want the community to remember you by?

A: I want them to just remember me for me. If you are good, people will naturally know what you do without telling them what you are good at!

Q: What would your ideal day be like?

A: It will be to wake up at whatever time my body wakes up. Usually about 1-2pm. Take my time to laze in bed till I feel like getting up, breakfast in bed with good brunch and coffee, lay somewhere and catch up on my television shows, be surrounded by super cute cats and kittens and enjoy time where I do not have to worry about anything, eat whenever and whatever I want, end the day off with an awesome body and foot massage.
