Catch me if you can!

23 April, 2015

Our Sporting Hero. My Neighbour. Dipna Lim.

Dipna’s best childhood memories are of her running around the playground near her house, playing catching with her friends. Her favourite game was the game of catch – she loved running as fast as she could to avoid getting caught and never dreamt that her love for running would one day see her run for Singapore.

Q. Where is your area of residence?

A. I stay around Springleaf – near Upper Thomson. I’ve been here all my life!

Q. What is the one thing you like most about your neighbourhood?

A. Food! I love that food is widely available here – and Prata Place is my favourite place to get my prata fix!

Q. What is the one thing you least like about your neighbourhood?

A. Sometimes I find that it’s quite ulu or inaccessible but that’s also what I find charming about it. How many other neighbourhoods have the privilege of hearing an ‘orchestra’ of crickets and other insects ‘making music’ every night?

Q. How would you promote your neighbourhood to competing athletes from other countries?

A. I’ll lure them in with the promise of good food!

Q. What drove you to your current sport?

A. I used to play catching at the playground in my neighbourhood and that first sparked my love for running. Catching is super fun and you get to play with your friends and have fun at the same time – it definitely helps if you can run fast!

Q. What is the most interesting memory you have when playing your sport?

A. I got to meet the Queen of England while I was representing Singapore at the 2012 London Olympics.

Q. What is the most embarrassing moment you’ve had while playing your sport?

A. I still kick myself accidentally when I run sometimes – and it hurts!

Q. Do you have any pre-game rituals before a major sporting event?

A. I take a deep breath before I get onto the blocks

Q. What was the best advice you were ever given?

A. My mother once said “Everything will work out the way it should. So be patient.” That’s some of the best advice I’ve received so far.

Q. What is your one food based guilty-pleasure?

A. I have a sweet tooth – I love my Teh Bing Gah Dai, cookies and ice-cream

Q. If you had the chance to have a superpower, which would you choose?

A. I would love to read minds! Then I’ll know what everyone else is thinking.

Q. How would you want the community to remember you by?

A. I hope to be remembered as a tracker who inspired the community and the next generation to keep fit, pick up sports, and stay positive.
