Dancing your way to fitness

The entire foyer of the Sengkang Sports and Recreation Centre was filled with upbeat music as participants moved in unison to the music during the ActiveSG Dance Fitness event that was held on Valentine's Day.
The third of its kind to be held, the event has attracted a strong loyal following, as those who participated in the Tampines and Pasir Ris Dance Fitness were spotted at Sengkang Sports Centre.
Cindy Chng, 50, and her friend Judy Ang were amongst the participants who have been to all three events, and they brought with them a group of friends who expressed interest in participating in such events.
The event consisted of three different dance segments. The first session started off with Zumba (below), follow by KpopXFitness, and culminated with Bollyrobics.

“We wanted to try something new. We never tried KpopXFitness and Bollyrobics before, so we wanted to try it out since the registration fee was affordable too,” Ang said.
The pair felt that incorporating dance steps and music was a great way for people to start moving and keep fit. The instructor also played a part to keep the mood and tempo high.
“Other sports were too monotonous. But, I think the music makes the whole activity livelier. It’s a different kind of exercise,” Chng shared.
Many of the participants felt that the high intensity workout of these dance steps allows them to sweat more and it worked different parts of their body at one go. Burning of calories and keeping fit was made easier through such an activity, since the emphasis was on the fun factor.

It was also a lovely Valentine's Day activity for several couples, as married pair Joanne Tan and Victor Tan decided to try something different this year for the special occasion.
“My wife wanted to participate and told me that maybe we should have a change of event to spend our Valentine's Day. She suggested to come to Sengkang and do some workout and this is definitely a sweaty affair,” Mr Tan said.
By her own admission, Mrs Tan has never taken any interest in fitness classes. However, this event has seen her have a change of heart, as she now looks to participate in similar activities in the future.
“I think it was really fun. I really enjoyed it, especially the KpopXFitness. ActiveSG has done a lot of collaborations with the Health Promotion Board and I think it is really good for us. Especially at our age, we need to exercise more,” she shared.
