Team Singapore's men's shooting team made history on Thursday morning, winning a Bronze medal in the 25m Standard Pistol Men's Team Finals at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range.

The team, comprising Poh Lip Meng, Gai Bin and Lim Swee Hon, posted a score of 1,692 to win Singapore's first ever medal in a men's team pistol event at the Asian Games. China won the Gold medal with a score of 1,710, while host nation South Korea took second place with 1,707 points.

The last time a Team Singapore male shooter  won a medal in an air rifle or pistol competition at the Games was back in 1962 when Fred B De Souza bagged Gold in the Small Bore Rifle Prone 50m event in Jakarta.

In the 25m Standard Pistol individual event, Gai Bin performed the best, shooting a score of 567 to finish eighth out of 32 competitors. Lim was 11th with a score of 563 while Poh was just one position below in 12th place with 562 points.

Poh, who won two Silver medals at last year's SEA Games in Myanmar, was clearly delighted with the result. When asked if he knew that his team had made history on this day, Poh flashed a megawatt smile and exclaimed: “Yes, we did make history today! It's the first time the men have won a team medal at the Asian Games. I'm so happy. It feels great.”

Poh also added that the achievement meant even more to his team because they were, unlike their counterparts from China, Korea and Vietnam, not full-time athletes.

He said: “We are working professionals so most of the time we can only train on the weekends. This means we have to sacrifice a lot just to make up for lost time and to catch up with the rest of the competition. This medal means so much more to us than just a Bronze.”

The trio will have their fingers on the triggers again on Friday when they participate in the Men's 25m Center Fire Pistol competition, and Poh believes this result can boost their confidence ahead of the event.

“This medal win is definitely going to boost our confidence, but we'll have to maintain our focus and not get overwhelmed by the achievement. We will try our best to perform well again,” he said.
