Glasgow Daily: Singapore wins first ever Men’s vault medal at Commonwealth Games

Gymnastics 

Wah Toon Medal

At the Hyrdro, Hoe Wah Toon clinched Singapore’s first Commonwealth Games medal in Gymnastics Men’s Individual Vault coming in third out of eight competitors with a score of 14.195. His teammate, Aizat Bin Muhammad Jufrie finished sixth in the same event with a score of 14.016.


Table Tennis 

Women’s Doubles 

Good news from the Scotstoun Sports Campus. Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu beat Li Chun Li and Karen Li from New Zealand 3-1. They will be advancing to the semi finals. Lin Ye and Zhou Yihan, though, bowed out of the competition after losing 2-3 to Lay Jian Fang and Miao Miao from Australia.

Women’s Singles 

Feng Tianwei beat her Women’s Doubles partner Yu Mengyu in the Women’s Singles Gold Medal match with a score of 4-1 in front of a packed crowd at the Scotstoun Sports Complex. Lin Ye also defeated Lay Jian Fang from Australia 4-0 to win the Bronze medal and completed a clean sweep of the Women’s Singles for the Republic.

Men’s Singles 

Gao Ning beat Henzel William from Autralia 4-1 while Zhan Jian won 4-2 in his match against Wang Zhen from Canada. They will both advance to the semi finals.

Men’s Doubles 

Li Hu and Gao Ning subdued India's Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj with a score of 3-1 in the Men's Doubles Gold medal match to clinch the coveted Gold medal. Zhan Jian and Yang Zi beat England's Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford in a close fought match to win 3-2 in the Men's Doubles Bronze Medal match and secured another medal for Singapore. Mixed Doubles Zhan Jian and Feng Tianwei lost out to Liam Pitchford and Ho Tin Tin from England 2-3 in the Mixed Doubles Semi Finals. They will play in the Bronze medal match later today.


Badminton 

Mixed Doubles 

Over at the Emirates Arena, Triyachart Chayut and Yao Lei succumbed to a 0-2 defeat by Chris and Gabrielle Adcock from England. 

Danny Chrisnanta and Vanessa Neo dug deep to come back from a game down but eventually lost out 1-2 to Malaysia’s Lai Pei Ling and Chan Peng Soon. 

Men’s Singles 

Derek Wong continued his fine form at the Games with a win over India’s Kidambi Srikanth 2-1. He will take on R V Gurusaidutt from India in the semi finals later today. 

Men’s Doubles 

Danny Chrisnanta and Triyachart Chayut combined to beat Scotland’s Blair Robert and Rietvelde Paul 2-0 to reach the semi finals. Women’s Doubles The Singapore pair of Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia went down 1-2 to Malaysia’s Lim Loo Yin and Lai Pei Jing.


Athletics 

Moving on to Hampden Park Stadium, the women’s 4x100m relay team comprising of Habibah Najihahbi Ahmad, Veronica Shanti Pereira, Eugenia Tan and Kugapriya Chandra finished in 11th out of 13 teams with a time of 46:84 seconds.

Their male counterparts, Calvin Kang, Muhamad Elfi Mustapa, Lee Cheng Wei and Muhammad Naqib Asmin came close to qualifying for the finals as they finished 9th out of 16 teams with a time of 40:05 seconds.
