Road to Nanjing: Aquatic athletes ready for Youth Olympic Games
14 August, 2014
Following Singapore’s success in the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, several of our Team Singapore athletes will turn their attention next to the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which will take place from 16 to 28 August 2014 in Nanjing, China.
Singapore will be sending a five-member contingent for aquatics in the YOG comprising one diver and four swimmers. Jonathan Chan will be representing the Republic in the Diving 10 metre Platform event.

Being the sole representative in diving, Jonathan aims to give his best and remain focus for his task ahead. Incidentally, he fell in love with this sport after seeing the previous Games’ edition in Singapore.
“My love for swimming started because of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. I am proud to be a Team Singapore athlete and be able to represent my country. My main source of support comes from my teammates, friends and family,” said the Anglo Chinese School (Independent) student who also has an interest in knitting.
Jonathan won the Men’s Platform event at the 2012 Southeast Asia (SEA) Swimming Championships but was not able to defend his Gold medal in the Championships earlier this year in June after sustaining an injury during training.
Despite that setback, Jonathan has been under the steady guidance of his coaches and medical team during his road to recovery and is all geared up for the YOG.
Also part of the five-man aquatic team is Darren Lim. He took part in his first major tournament last year at the SEA Games in Myanmar. Despite not managing a podium finish, Darren clocked his personal best in the 50 metres Freestyle event.

“I must learn from my mistakes and improve from there,” said Darren when asked of the one thing he must do after a competition.
And learn he did. The 15-year-old created waves when he crossed paths with 2013 SEA Games Gold medallist, Triady Fauzi Sidiq, at the SEA Swimming Championships 2014 yet again. He edged out his Indonesian rival to clinch the Gold in the same event.
“That was a great start and definitely a morale booster for me,” quipped Darren who is aiming to come home with a medal from the Games.
Aquatics is one of the eight sports that Team Singapore will be taking part in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, held from 16 to 28 August 2014. The others include Athletics, Badminton, Gymnastics, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis and Triathlon.
Let’s cheer on our YOG athletes as they embark on a journey to bring glory to the nation. Pledge your support for our Team Singapore athletes via www.facebook.com/teamsg and instagram! #ourteamsg
