Team Singapore Shuttlers Derek Wong Zi Liang and Danny Bawa Chrisnanta are aiming for a decent run at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, that will be held from July 23 - August 3, 2014.

Preparations begun months ago and both Derek and Danny have been keeping themselves occupied with extra hours on the court with their coaches.

“My coach has been increasing the intensity of training, with longer hours and lesser breaks in between. We definitely feel fitter and stronger. We will be leaving for Commonwealth Games soon, so we must now maximise our preparation before the departure,” revealed Derek, who went on a brilliant run in the OUE Singapore Open 2014, sending off world number 17 Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-16, 16-21, 21-16.

“Although we played separately during the Thomas and Uber Cup, it was a stepping stone towards the Commonwealth Games. Now we are all together as a team in Scotland. We have a strong team and we will strive do our best.”

The duo have been keeping themselves match fit with several international competitions. For Derek, he travelled to India for the Thomas Cup, ending their final group stage with a win over Nigeria.

As for Danny, he recently won the men’s doubles category in the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold in March. Danny partnered Chayut Triyachart to seal a memorable 21-17, 22-20 win over the home team Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah in Johor Bahru.

“We have to be focused and try to maintain discipline at all times; and make use of our free time as effectively as possible” said Danny, who also won the Dutch Open Grand Prix mixed doubles in 2013.

Unlike Derek, this will be Danny’s first stint in the Commonwealth Games and the quarter-finalist in the recent Singapore Open is eager to better his performance and do the Republic proud.

“It is a new experience and challenge and also a very important event for Singapore. I hope to do my best and hopefully win a medal for the country. There will be a team event as well and I will give my all to get a point for us,” Danny added.

“I can’t promise anything but we will definitely go all out for Singapore and I am ready for it.”

Although the draw for the Games is yet to be made, Derek believes he is capable of improving his finish compared to his previous outing.

“I played in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. I made it to the top eight in the singles category. Back then, my world ranking was much lower and my personal aim will be to go one step further now,’ commented the current 41st ranked singles player.

Badminton is one of the seven sports that Team Singapore will be taking part in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, held from 23 July to 3 August 2014. The others include Athletcis, Gymnastics, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting. Do extend your support to the shuttlers as they prepare for their first match on 24 July!
