Carrying a weight of expectations on her young shoulders is not something which fazes Youth Olympic Games Silver medallist Isabelle Li Siyun, who also took Silver in the Women’s Singles event for Table Tennis at the 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. She then went a step further by helping Singapore achieve Team Gold at the Games in Myanmar in December 2013.

Recalling what kick started her journey towards achieving excellence in the sport she loves, the highly touted home grown talent said, “I was immediately attracted to table tennis when I was exposed to the sport during a PE lesson at Chongfu Primary School. I loved the rhythm of the game and the fast reaction that was needed produced an adrenaline rush that made it exciting for me.”

There is nothing which makes Isabelle prouder than flying her country’s flag at each of the Games she has attended to date, and the 2014 Commonwealth Games is no different.

Compatriot Lin Ye, who will be teaming up with Isabelle in Glasgow in their quest for Gold, already has a host of glittery sporting achievements in spite of her tender years.

These include being the 2014 SEA Junior Championships U18 Girls Singles champion and 2013 ITTF Grand Finals U21 Girls’ Singles champion.

Having started playing table tennis at the age of eight, Lin Ye attributes all her success in the table tennis arena to the fervent support she has received from her main support group consisting of friends and family.

The 18 year-old also admitted to harbouring hopes of one day realizing her dream to play at the Olympic Games one day.

The Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 3 August 2014. Support our Team Singapore athletes as they face their first opponents on 24 July for the Women’s Team event, 29 July for the Women’s Singles and 31 July for the Women’s Doubles. Stay tuned for the full competition schedule and more updates!
