Glasgow Daily: Teo Shun Xie strikes Gold in Shooting

Team Singapore claimed its first medal of the Commonwealth Games 2014 when shooter Teo Shun Xie struck gold in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol competition. Her score of 198.6 is also a new Commonwealth Games Finals record.
Here’s a quick look at the rest of the day’s action involving Team Singapore athletes from Glasgow.
At the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the men’s swimming team comprising Quah Zheng Wen, Danny Yeo, Clement Lim, Christopher Cheong and Joseph Schooling finished 8th in the 4x100m freestyle finals rewriting the national record with a time of 3:20.98.
Having claimed the news headlines on Day 1 of the Games for setting a new national record in the 50m butterfly, Joseph Schooling clocked a timing of 23.96 sec to finish 7th in the 50 m butterfly finals.
In women’s swimming action, Amanda Lim qualified for the women’s 50m freestyle semi-finals with a timing of 25.81 sec, but was unable to reach the finals later in the day, finishing 14th with a time of 25.93 sec.
Tong Kah Mun, Team Singapore’s representative in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Individual All-Around finals finished 13th out of 16 competitors with a score of 48.100. She had previously finished 19th out of 32 competitors on day 1 with a score of 46.650 to qualify for the finals.
In badminton action at the Emirates Arena, Chayut Triyachart, Terry Hee, Liang Xiao Yu, Huang Chao, Yao Lei, Shinta Mulia Sari, Vanessa Neo and Danny Bawa Chrisnanta were all involved as Team Singapore’s Mixed Team followed up on their 5-0 victory against Jamaica the day before by overcoming South Africa with the same scoreline on day 2 to top Pool E in the Prelims. They will next meet Norfolk Island on day 3 at 0900hrs Glasgow time.
Over at Barry Buddon Shooting Centre, Teo Shun Xie made history when she wrote a new Commonwealth Games Finals record in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol finals with a score of 198.6 and clinched the first gold medal for Team Singapore at the Commonwealth Games 2014.
In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification Round, Keith Chan finished 11th out of 19 competitors with a score of 610.4 while teammate Sean Tay finished 12th with a score of 609.7. Both did not qualify for the finals.

A strong Team Singapore men’s table tennis team comprising Clarence Chew, Li Hu, Zhan Jian, Gao Ning and Yang Zi kept up their 100 percent record at the Games by winning 3-0 against Seychelles in Pool A of the Qualification Round at Scotstoun Sports Campus.
All three of Team Singapore’s representatives won their matches in straight sets to help Singapore gain the upperhand and qualify for the next round. Gao Ning set the stage by overcoming Godfrey Sultan in straight sets 11-6, 11-2, 11-4; before Yang Zi replicated his success by winning 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 in match number 2 against Seychelles’ Dario Laurence. Gao Ning and Li Hu then sealed victory by winning 11-3,11-3, 11-8 in match number 3.
