Glasgow Daily: Schooling gets Singapore’s first ever swimming medal at Games

Joseph Isaac Schooling made history on Monday by not only setting a new national record for the men’s 100m butterfly event, but also earning the Republic’s first ever swimming medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The swimmer clinched Silver with a timing of 51:69 seconds, coming behind South Africa’s Chad Le Clos who finished with a Games record of 51.29 seconds.

“It was great, when I jumped in the pool I knew this was really the race I was confident in, and I was at peace. I knew what I had to do. I remember thinking to myself that in the last 15 yards I had to dig deep. I am glad that I could win Singapore first swimming medal, and it was also a relief to me,” Schooling said of his feat.

There was more good news for the swimming discipline as Clement Lim gave his best performance yet in the men’s 50m freestyle event, to earn a personal best timing of 23:27 seconds. Lim finished 18th out of 68 competitors, while his compatriot Quah Zheng Wen came in 22nd at 23:81 seconds.

Tao Li too swam yesterday, and made it to the semi-finals of the women’s 50m backstroke finals. She narrowly missed out on a place in the finals after finishing with a time of 29:13 seconds.

Table Tennis

There was more good news with table tennis storming to yet another first-place finish, as the men’s team replicated their female counterparts’ effort with a 3-1 victory over England in the final.

In the first match, Zhan Jian beat Paul Drinkhall with a scoreline of 3-2 followed by a clean sweep of 3-0 by Gao Ning in match number 2 against Liam Pitchford. The third match saw Li Hu and Gao Ning defeated by the English duo of Andrew Baggaley and Paul Drinkhall with a score of 1-3. Zhan Jian then wrapped up the tie with a 3-0 win over Andrew Baggaley to clinch the Gold medal for the Republic.

Singapore also earned another medal with our shuttlers just edging out India in the mixed team’s event for the badminton Bronze medal. While Singapore lost out in both the singles matches, they made up for it in the doubles’ match-ups to prevail 3-2.

The tie went right down to the wire where Singapore women’s doubles comprising Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei triumphed 29-27 in the rubber set to clinch the Bronze medal for Singapore.

In shooting, the men put up a good fight, with Gai Bin finishing fourth in the men’s 50m pistol event after posting a score of 143.4. Poh Lip Meng came in two places behind with a score of 108.3

Abel Lim finished tenth out of 40 shooters with a score of 616.2 but failed to proceed to the finals of the men’s 50m rifle prone.

Jasmine Ser of the women’s squad has to settle for 15th place in the women’s 50m rifle prone finals with a score of 612.

Gymnastics also went on during the day, with the men’s team finishing in tenth place after a score of 110.438. The women’s team was also in action as they grabbed a score of 74.507.

Our Team Singapore gymnasts will be in action again today, with the individual scores from the various routines being tabulated at the end of the Games. Watch this space for more updates!
