The Singapore National BMX Championship 2014 was held on May 25 at the BMX Track of Tampines Bike Park. The event, which was organised by DirTraction Group Pte. Ltd., and sanctioned by the Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF), saw 43 participants competing in seven categories: Men’s Open/Elite, Women’s Open/Elite, Juniors-A (15-18 yo), Juniors-B (11-14 yo), Masters, Kids (6-10 yo), and Open Cruiser/MTB.

Bike enthusiasts of all ages, mostly regulars at the Tampines Bike Park, attended with family and friends. It was a special occasion that they looked forward to every year since 2010, except for last year when the event was not held.

For many, it was an affair for the whole family. One of the youngest participants, seven-year-old Nur Hafiqah Binte Azman, who competed in the Kids category, came with her father Muhammad Azman Bin Atan and three older brothers Muhammad Hafiy, Muhammad Hadlifiy, and Muhammad Hanafiy - aged 15, 13, and 10 respectively. All siblings competed in their own categories.

“We have about nine bikes at home. Even my wife rides although she doesn't compete,” said Md. Azman.

The event, which lasted for about three hours, ended with a bittersweet note as everyone was well aware that it was probably the last major event to be held at the Tampines Bike Park. The bike park, which was built for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, will soon close down after almost three years, to make way for residential developments.

With the closure of the bike park, there is worry that “it will limit promotional, developmental, national training and competition options for the SCF and the BMX fraternity,” said Mr. Mahipal Singh, SCF General Manager.

For many of the riders, it was sad but something that they had “no choice but to accept.” However they are hopeful that they will soon be given a new venue where they can continuously ride in competition-standards tracks and of course, safe environment, especially for the young bikers.

“Whatever happens, this won’t stop us from riding. Worst case scenario, we will probably all go to Malaysia, which is nearby, to ride,” said one biker.

The top three winners for each category received gold, silver, or bronze medals, as well as a National Champion Jersey for the champion. The awards were presented to all the winners by Singapore Cycling Federation Mountain Bike Vice President Mr. Hafizi Senen.
