It had barely turned ten o'clock in the morning, but the swimming pool was already half-filled, as throngs of families made their ways into the waters, all seemingly in anticipation of something.

Before long, two coaches stood at the front and began directing the crowd to perform a series of movements, while a stern-looking man stood by the sidelines and scrutinised the participants in the pool.

The coaches were aquatic workout instructors, while the man peering into the ball with extreme concentration was from the Singapore Books of Record, as the crowd looked to create history by setting a Singapore record for having the most number of people partaking in a mass aquatic workout at one time.

With the coaches’ high energy pushing the 173 personnel in the water to keep it up, after 30 minutes of gruelling punching and kicking in the water, history was made on 27 April 2014 as a certificate was awarded for the record-setting feat.

“It is a good weekend and it is a good work out for a family event, of course there is a little bit of pride inside (in helping break the record), but everyone is enjoying the event,” said Hisham Hashim, who participated in the aquatic workout with his three toddlers.

The water exercising event was held in conjunction with the open house of ActiveSG, an initiative which Sport Singapore actively looks to promote a better and healthier living through sports.

As with the mass aquatic workout record event, there were other family-oriented activities held within the complex itself to promote ActiveSG.

One of the more popular activity was the Pirates Treasure Hunt (below), where a team of three or four picked up on clues from a map and slowly navigated their way through the tasks set for them to complete the game.

In those tasks, it was not unusual to see a father engaging in a series of challenge with his children, while the mother looked on eagerly and provided encouragement from the sidelines, while there was the occasional stern but fair warning for mischievous kids.

At the end of the hunt, participants were presented with a token of appreciation. Both adults and children were unanimous in agreeing that they appreciated the effort made to organise these activities.

While the shy young ones could only excitedly nod their head when asked whether they had fun, the ones in charge were relatively more candid.

“We actually didn’t know that there were so many things lined up here, so it came as a surprise for us. So thank you ActiveSG for organising this, it is very great fun for the children to explore the vicinity by playing the treasure hunt game,” said Jeanette Ong.

Also on display at the open house were various sporting events, as athletes took their time out to showcase their prowess in their respect fields, and at the same time invited the audiences to join them and have a go at the sport. Among them were archery, floorball, table tennis (below) and hockey.

This open house was held a day after the official launch at Jurong West Sports Centre, where similar activities were held for the public to enjoy.

There are three more open houses to be held so be sure to check out the one nearest to your home! The venues and dates are as follows:
