It has been a fruitful 2013 for Singapore’s table tennis, as the national representatives swept all the gold medals on offer at the SEA Games 2013 and won medals at various international tournaments.

However, Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) President Er Dr Lee Bee Wah was keen for the players to sustain their performance in 2014 as Singapore looked to maintain their credentials as a powerhouse in the sport.

"I think our players did very well, I hope that we will continue with the performance, " Dr Lee said at the annual Keppel-STTA Awards Night, where the athletes who performed well in table tennis were celebrated.

"The long term aim is actually this year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Of course, it is always the Olympics which is the main target; whatever we do is towards the Olympics."

Dr Lee’s focus was also on the upcoming Youth Olympics to be held in China, with various youth players still battling to gain qualification for the tournament.

"Our players have not qualified yet, there are a few more stops (for them to try and qualify), we hope that they will fight harder," Dr Lee shared.

"It is not easy because the first time when it was in Singapore, and because we are the host country automatically we had one boy and one girl in the (tournament). This round we have to qualify for it, we know that it is tough," she added.

With the Sports Hub due to open in April this year, Dr Lee revealed that STTA were hoping to get more funding in order to use the venue to host prestigious table tennis tournaments and provide players with more exposure.

"We would be more than keen to bring the events here if we can get the sponsors," Dr Lee expressed.

"By having the world class tournaments in Singapore, it would attract more attention and help all the budding players.

"But due to the limited resources we need to be very prudent, so normally we must secure funding before we go and bid (to bring in an event)."

With an eye on improving the skill-base of players, Dr Lee also added that STTA will continue developing training programmes tailored to bring out the potential in youth table tennis players.

One such programme was the STTA-PCF table tennis programme where budding players could learn about the sport.

The players who showed the most promise would then be invited to training centres where they would further hone their talents.
