The Singapore National Game (SNG) 2014 flagged off its 200-metre Dragon Boat races at the Water Sports Centre on 1 November.

Teams had to navigate through windy conditions and it made for an exciting race as teams continuously took turns to lead the pack, with collusions not helping anyone.

In the Junior final, Hwa Chong Institution Team A took the lead right from the start after the horn went off. The team did not slow down and kept pressing on until the finishing lines.

Talking about the performance of the team, the team captain, Andrew Lee Ruo Zhen from Hwa Chong Institution Team A said, “When we won obviously we feel happy, but not to a significant extent, because we knew we could do much better.”

Although four out of six boats were all-boys boats, Yuan Ching Team A and B went on to take the challenge with their girl’s power with two all-girls boats. The girls did not give up and peddled their hearts out at the Water sports Centre.

For the Master’s Category final, all teams were on par until the 50-meter mark, as distance started to grow further apart. The leading boat, Team Kiyah Splashh were leading with HTSRA seniors coming in very closely on them at the 150-meter mark.

The Grand Final for the Open Team saw a very competitive race between all six boats.

At the 150-meter mark, the central three lanes saw a very close fight with each other. As the drum beats went faster, each team started pacing up, eagerly wanting to go past the finishing line to grab the champion title.

Home Team Dragon paddled passed the finishing line, with the two lanes beside them just few inches away behind them.

Captain of Home Team Dragon, Norris said, “The adrenaline was through the roof, because we were facing other tough competitions. Especially the school teams, they have always been the threat for other teams.”

The official results for the SNG 2014 Dragon Boat race will be released soon.
