It all stemmed from a chance encounter and a desire to have fun.

Secondary school student Eugene Ho was playing tennis when he noticed a banner with images of people having fun while doing sports. Intrigued, he visited the website that was provided and, delighted by the free membership offer, signed up immediately.

The athletic 15 year-old turned out to be the lucky 500, 000th person to sign up for ActiveSG, the national movement for sport that was launched in April this year. Eugene was offered 500 worth of ActiveSG credits, as well as a personalised party, held at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

Organised by ActiveSG, the party, held on 15 November 2014, saw about 60 of Eugene’s friends and family gathered to try out novel activities that included Piloxing - a combination of Pilates, boxing, and dance - and aqua-spinning, or cycling on stationary bicycles in shallow water. An ideal programme that appealed to the teen’s sporty lifestyle, it was the perfect opportunity for him to introduce sports to his loved ones.

“Through today’s activities, I hope to show them how good and fun sports can be and use these activities as examples of what ActiveSG can offer them,” he enthused.

The day’s line-up was certainly more than just a party for Eugene’s milestone membership. It was a celebration of sport and youth, to encourage all Singaporeans, both young and old, to lead more active lifestyles.

Articulating the organisation’s aspiration for Singapore, ActiveSG chief Lai Ching Kwang addressed the guests,, “We are heartened by the encouraging response towards ActiveSG thus far, having welcomed over 600,000 members in less than a year of its launch. We will continue to enhance our offerings in tandem with growing demands – from rejuvenating our facilities and programmes, to improving the capabilities of our staff to better meet the needs of members.”

“I think that the youths and students have a lot of energy. I think that this is a very good forum for them to expend the energy that they have, and make use of their time more meaningfully. I believe that exercise really promotes a better quality of life; it helps them to focus better in their studies, it helps them to be more disciplined,” concurred Eugene’s teacher, Low Beng Hong, who also expressed that it was nice of Eugene to have invited his teachers as well.

Indeed, Eugene fully exemplifies ActiveSG’s hopes for young people to live better through sport. Currently undergoing training in tennis, cross-country running, and aikido, the precocious youth is also impeccably-mannered and perfectly comfortable with being on friendly terms with the older generation. In fact, while some students may decry spending time with older members of their families, Eugene enjoys engaging in sporty pursuits with his parents and relatives.

“Involvement in activities together can help [to improve relationships among] family members,” affirmed Eugene’s aunt Jennifer Ho, who also mentioned that their family often played sports together.

Sport also serves as the perfect outlet for Eugene to relax after a gruelling semester at school. “Now that it’s the school holidays, I think I’ll be visiting ActiveSG centres about three to four times a week, so as to suit my active lifestyle, and to help me de-stress after the examinations,” he remarked.

Using the ActiveSG points that he had been awarded, Eugene is looking forward to taking up more sports to help train his core fitness, such as Piloxing and yoga. With the myriad facilities and courses in place, it seems that Eugene will be guaranteed a healthy and eventful term break this year, courtesy of ActiveSG.
