Team Singapore will be fighting for medal glory in the final days of table tennis action at the Asian Games after Feng Tianwei in the women’s singles and the men’s doubles pair of Gao Ning and Li Hu progressed into the last four.

Medal hopeful Feng eased past Kazakhstan’s Yuliya Ryabova 4-0 in the Round of 32 held in the morning and was again too much to handle as she defeated the Thailand’s Nanthana Komwong 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Up against Japan’s Ai Fukuhara, Feng took a commanding lead by winning the opening three games but then faced a determined rally from her opponent who forced the match into a seventh game.

With a place in the last four on the line, Feng regrouped and secured victory after beating Fukuhara 11-6.

Feng will now play China’s Zhu Yuling on Friday for a place in the gold medal match.

In the Women’s Singles competition, Lin Ye’s first match in the Round of 32 was a walkover and she advanced to face Lee Ho Ching of Hong Kong. Lin Ye lost the first two games before winning the third and fourth. Lee, however, regained her momentum to beat the Singaporean 4-2.

In the Men’s Singles competition, Gao Ning easily despatched Padasak Tanviriyavechakul of Thailand 4-0 and moved into the quarterfinal but was beaten by China’s Xu Xin 4-0. His compatriot Li Hu also fell to a Chinese opponent in the Round of 16, losing 4-0 to China’s Fan Zhendong.

The duo, however, enjoyed better fortunes in the quarterfinal of the Men's Doubles as they beat a resilient Japanese side 3-1. The Team Singapore pairing will next take on China’s Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong in the semifinal on Friday.

In rugby action, Team Singapore’s women’s team beat Malaysia 27-0 in the 5th-8th place classification game on Thursday morning and later met Thailand to fight for the 5th-6th places. The ladies put up a stern fight, with Elly Sudira scoring a try and Wong Yilin scoring a conversion, but the Thais proved too much to handle as Team Singapore lost 7-38 to secure sixth place in the competition.
