Four medallists who performed well at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games received sports scholarships from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation today.

Team Singapore medallists Bernie Chin, Samantha Yom, Martina Lindsay Veloso and Teh Xiu Yi received scholarships from Mr Tan Kian Chew, Group Chief Executive Officer of NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Ltd at a ceremony witnessed by Guest-of-Honour Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, Chef de Mission Mr Mark Chay, and the rest of the Singapore contingent.

Eighteen athletes represented Team Singapore in eight sports at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games from 16 to 28 August 2014 and returned with a historic medal haul of two gold and two silver medals.

Sailors Bernie and Samantha became the first Singaporeans to win gold at the Summer Youth Olympic Games when they bagged a gold medal each in the Byte CII men’s and women’s events respectively. They will each receive scholarships amounting to $50,000 from NTUC FairPrice Foundation.

Shooter Martina will receive a scholarship valued at $25,000 for winning a silver medal in the 10m Air Rifle Women’s event. Xiu Yi’s partnership with Egyptian Mohamed Ahmed earned her a silver medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed International Team event and $20,000 in scholarship.

The NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship is sponsored by NTUC FairPrice Foundation, a registered charity set up by NTUC FairPrice in 2008 whose aims are to provide “A Better Life for the Community” and to be a world-class retailer with a heart. The Foundation also sponsored scholarship awards for medallists of the 2009 and 2013 Asian Youth Games and the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

The Scholarship is modelled differently from the Multi-Million Award Programme (MAP) for the four major games – the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Southeast Asian Games, where recipients of the NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship receive sports scholarships of cash values instead of cash. They can claim expenses such as school or tuition fees, purchase of training and competition equipment, travel costs to training camps and competitions, coaching fees and more.

Said Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Manpower and President of Singapore National Olympic Council, “I would like to congratulate the YOG contingent and the supporters who worked very hard behind the scenes. The Youth Olympic Games started in Singapore, as a nation we played a very big part in the YOG movement. Sport is a very competitive endeavour. It is also about character building and developing values which will last a lifetime, not just as athletes but also as individuals. The YOG also establishes mutual understanding among competitors, builds camaraderie and friendships among team members. It is a good opportunity for athletes to get to know each other better and enjoy the cultural exchanges. It is about setting the right foundation, so that athletes can compete as hard as they can in a way befitting of the Olympic values.”

Said Samantha Yom, “I am very grateful to receive the NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship from the Singapore National Olympic Council and the NTUC FairPrice Foundation. Every athlete would need financial support to pursue our endeavours, this Scholarship would certainly help me to go further in my sports and academic pursuits.”
