A happy moment for a Passion Run for Kids 2013 participant on Sunday. More children are participating in runs specially organised for kids, many of which are linked with major running events in Singapore (image by VOXSPORTS).
The POSB PAssion Run For Kids 2013 held on the 8th of September witnessed over a thousand participants, testament to the fact that kids runs in Singapore has undoubtedly increased in popularity over the past few years.

Heavy showers that came on Sunday morning forcing the cancellation of the kids’ races did little to dampen spirits as participants chose to have quality family time that they came for. One of the most typical and essential feature of kids races in Singapore is the inclusion of fringe activities to promote family bonding. The POSB PAssion Run For Kids event was no different as it helped to keep families entertained with games and various other booths while they waited for the 3.5KM Family Walk flag-off.

“Although the kids’ race was cancelled, the kids were encouraged to join the 3.5KM Family Walk. In fact, the Family Walk has always been the most popular category with over 4,000 participants each year. Run For Kids has certainly grown over the years, from a simple running event to a family event with carnival activities for everyone”, said a spokesperson from the event.
Pauline Chee, a mother of two whom participated in the family walk, said, “This race helps to build up the confidence and self-esteem of my kids because they have been training a little, but at the end the of the day, every one of them gets a medal and they are a winner of their own.”

Tuty Ningku, a mother of three, who had also participated in the family walk stated that the race was a good way to “raise funds for the needy and bond her family together”.

Jointly organized by the People’s Association (PA) and POSB Bank Singapore, the charity run event that was held at The Promontory at Marina Bay raised a total of $1.1million. The proceeds will be channeled into the POSB PAssion Kids Fund, which helps to put young children from low income and needy families through different learning programmes.

Popular Runs for Kids in Singapore
Besides the POSB PAssion Run For Kids, there are also other kids’ run that are held in Singapore that makes up the Top Five Kids’ Runs list, such as the Cold Storage Kids Run, as well as major marathons like the Standard Chartered Marathon, Real Run and Safari Zoo Run that have categories catering specially to the young.

Kids’ runs are gaining popularity amongst parents nowadays as they are considered to be all-rounded family activities that help encourage healthy lifestyles and family bonding all at the same time. It also helps to build their children’s confidence from a young age and instil the concept of friendly competition.

While the Real Run takes the young participants on a journey through the scenic man-made island of Sentosa, the Standard Chartered Marathon offers participants an alternative set against the scenic skyline of the Singapore city. The Safari Zoo Run on the other hand is unique in its own way as it aims to help raise funds for the conservation of wildlife.

The Cold Storage Kids Run, one of the most popular kids runs in Singapore, is a marathon that caters specifically to children and has unique race categories such as the 3GEN Family Chase, a non-competitive team race that encourages the grandparent and parent to form a team with the child to participate.

With these five runs on the list exploding in registration numbers, there are definitely more to come in the near future. Next up is the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2013 which is just around the corner. Registration for those who are interested to sign up their children for the 750M Kids Dash is still open!
