Women do get it more than you know

Established in 2005, the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge is the only strength competition in Singapore. It is designed to reflect some of the qualities Home Team NSmen possess – physical strength, endurance, determination, teamwork, agility and mental muscle. Participants are put through 5 heavyweight challenges.

The event celebrated its 8th year recently and had evolved to include women! WNS spoke to 3 women who shared their winning stories!

“I gave it my best during the competition and I’m really glad that it paid off. I am most proud of my car-pull event where my timing is almost on par with the guys”

What were the 3 things that motivate you to participate in this event? Were you happy with your performance/result?

To measure myself against the rest of the competition, to have a shot at becoming the 1st Strongwoman in Singapore and to show the public how women can be strong like the men!

Share with our readers, the challenges you had?

First would have to be the lack of training with the actual competition equipments. Out of the 5 training days, I could only manage 2 due to work commitments. To do well in the competition, training with the equipments are as important as the functional training in the gym. Second, I fell sick few days before the competition with bad bout of flu and cough. During the competition, I had to deal with shortness of breath as my lungs were still congested. Thankfully, we had a 2hr break between each event so that really helped me a lot.

To all women out there who like to participate in this event, how should they prep themselves?

High weights training is a must, and of course with a good trainer and training program. Train with the competition equipments as much as you can to get the technique right as it is not all about pure strength. Eat right, stay healthy and most importantly do not overtrain.

Your recommendation (or little tips) to women out there who want to lead an active and fulfilling lifestyle but yet setting time to work out has always been at the sideline..

Pick a gym or activity that is either closest or en-route to your workplace or home so that you have no excuses to skip the session. If need be, have a buddy to workout together so that he/she can make sure you don’t chicken out (make sure your buddy is way more determined than you!). Start with baby steps and work your way up. Being too overly ambitious at the start is difficult to maintain on a long term basis.

What were the 3 things that motivate you to participate in this event?

Three things were myself, my teammates from the gym I trained with who was the Team Iron Behemoths (especially Samuel Lim) who encouraged me to join the event and lastly, my family, who has always been very supportive in everything that I do!

Share with our readers, the challenges you had?

One of the few challenges was that the tyre was slightly lower and the grooves of the tyre was different than the tires I had trained in the past, so I had to change my game plan immediately during the prelims just before my turn to adapt to the situation.

To all women out there who like to participate in this event, how should they prep themselves?

Train hard, eat well, have plenty of rest (at least 8 hours of sleep a day!) Take good care of your body during this phase of preparation because your body needs to recover to be able to perform at it’s best.

Your recommendation (or little tips) to women out there who want to lead an active and fulfilling lifestyle but yet setting time to work out has always been at the sideline..

Make small changes everyday to better yourself. Start slow, set yourself a goal to achieve every week. You will see changes sooner than you think. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals. That might put too much pressure on yourself and your plan might just backfire.

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or help from others!

Try something new at the gym, lifting heavy weights (it won’t make you bulky!) is the way to make yourself stronger!

What were the 3 things that motivate you to participate in this event?

My partner who has been actively involved in the strongman sports. My desire to want to try something new and challenging every year! I wanted to put my strength training to use!

Share with our readers, the challenges you had?

The hardest was the “log walk” and “car pull”. I didn’t have enough strength and weight to pull the car and felt extremely slow. The log walk was harder as I had to shuffle with quick steps under the load.

To all women out there who like to participate in this event, how should they prep themselves?

If they have natural strength, then they should apply it into practicing the implements such as the tyre flips and log walks. If not, they should train the basic moves such as deadlifts, squats and press in the gym as well as the Olympic lifts.

Your recommendation (or little tips) to women out there who want to lead an active and fulfilling lifestyle but yet setting time to work out has always been at the sideline..

Everyone has 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. All you need to set aside is : 1hour, 3-5times a week, for exercise. That’s less than 3% of your time every week spent on exercise. It goes a long way for a healthier and fulfilling life.
