Team Singapore’s Yong Yi Xiang won the country’s first gold medal at the 30th SEA Games for his strong performance in the Wushu men’s changquan finals on Sunday (1 Dec).

Speaking to media, the 25-year-old said that he was very shocked to be Singapore’s first Games gold medallist and was “very honoured and thankful for (the) opportunity”.

When asked if he felt any pressure when Malaysia’s Wong Weng Son scored 9.68 ahead of his performance, Yi Xiang revealed that he was too focused in the lead up to his performance to notice the score board.

“I zoned out what was happening in the arena… I really felt that if I could deliver my best performance, that would really be the most I can ask for. Doing Singapore proud is an extra honour that I’m really, really grateful for,” he said.

Yi Xiang scored a total of 9.70 which was enough to win him his third SEA Games medal. He had previously won Gold in the same event and a bronze in men’s cudgel at the 2015 Games at home.
