 shooting safety regulations

International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) places great emphasis on safety regulations, so all personnel, athletes and spectators must follow the specific safety requirements. Jury members or range officers can halt shooting at any point during the competition if they deem a situation to be dangerous. Guns and equipment may be removed from an athlete when a safety issue arises.

Shotgun events are governed by additional safety regulations because they happen on an open range. All personnel operating forward of the firing line must wear high visibility vests or jackets. Athletes must handle all guns with maximum care at all times and should not remove any guns from the firing line unless given permission by the range officer. Fluorescent coloured flags must also be inserted in all guns at all times until the safety flag removal command is given. The flags should be long enough to extend through the full length of the gun barrel to indicate that the chamber is empty.

While on their firing points, athletes must point their guns downrange towards the target area and must unload all guns with actions (bolt or locking mechanism) open and safety flags inserted when they leave the firing point. Officials must ensure the guns are unloaded before the athlete can commence with drying firing and aiming exercises, which are permitted only within a designated area or on the firing line.

Hearing protection is also a must within and in the immediate vicinity of all firing lines and shotgun ranges. However, hearing protection with any type of receiving devices incorporated are not permitted for athletes. Besides hearing protection, all personnel are also urged to wear eye protection like shatterproof shooting glasses or similar protection.
