The halls of Chung Cheng High School were filled with boisterous shouts during the week leading up to Good Friday. On a normally peaceful and quiet day, if you overheard these yells, chances are you would think a fight was taking place. However, if you took a peek into the venue, what you would find instead is a troop of young enthusiastic wushu competitors coming from all walks of life to present their best routine in the National School Games, Wushu Championships 2018.
A total of 73 schools around Singapore and 865 students participated in this year’s Wushu Championships. In order to have the opportunity to compete, a participant usually goes through gruelling training routines for two years before their skills are put to the test.
Nanyang Girls High and Hua Chong Institution came out as big winners of the competition with Nanyang Girls claiming first place for both the 'B' and 'C' division girls’ titles, while Hua Chong Institution secured top place in 'A' division girls and 'C' division boys titles. Other institutions that clinched the number one position included Victoria Junior college for 'A' division boys title and Victoria School for 'B' division boys title. Participants showcased their martial arts routine through flying kicks and energy-filled stances during featured competition categories such as Nanquan, Gunshu, Jianshu, Changquan and Taijiquan.
