She wasn’t able to reach the final of her favoured event - the 50m Rifle 3 Positions - at the Rio Olympic Shooting Centre on Thursday, but amidst the disappointment Team Singapore’s Jasmine Ser was able to take the broader perspective.

The 25-year-old shot a final score of 568-23x to place 34th out of 37 competitors and while that was well outside her hopes and expectations, Jasmine knows that despite her form slipping at the wrong time, she will have plenty more opportunities to show her talent.

“From every setback, you learn something and gain something,” she said after completing her competition.

“It didn’t go my way this time but the good thing was that the last series of standing were good,” said Jasmine, who shot three tens with her final shots.

“It just didn’t go my way today, some shots went far away when I triggered. I think I have to get my peak back, peak again at the right time."

“The whole of 2014 and 2015 I have been shooting at a really high standard to qualify for the Olympic Games - that includes the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games and I also made it to the World Championships."

“That period of time was the start of me going into the higher level and I tried to carry on to bring that form forward into the Olympics but I didn’t make it."

“After (the Asian qualifiers in) India my scores started to drop and I just couldn’t get myself back to the level that I was. My coach tried his best and I can see it, I tried to. But I think this opens the opportunity for me to climb back up again from this score and look forward to the next few competitions,” she said.

“Something positive will be how I hung on to it even though it was not going my way, how I kept it going until the last series where I got a good score. There is something good about that,” she said.

Jasmine, who earlier finished 25th in the 10m Air Rifle qualifications, is competing in her second Olympics, qualifying for Rio 2016 after appearing in London 2012 on an unused quota place.

Her coach Kirill Ivanov said the cause of the unexpected result was more to do with mental reasons than technique.

“Of course we didn’t expect such a low score. I think it is psychology because the technique was quite good, the sighting was quite good and something between the sighting to the competition target was not fine. It is not technique but the focus and the pressure,” said Ivanov.

But Jasmine certainly is not afraid to put a little pressure on herself and when asked what her goal was looking towards Tokyo in four years’ time, she said: “To win in 2020.”

“Back in London 2012, I didn’t qualify for the Olympics so I said I will qualify for Rio 2016. Maybe I said that wrongly so this time I am not going to say I will qualify - I will say I am going to win.”
